Headaches are caused by irritation in the arteries or muscles of the head and neck. Often we simply medicate the pain and forsake trying to find the causes of it. Frequently, lack of sleep and poor diet are causative factors in repeat headaches and migraines, while stress and over-doing it can be issues as well.

Prior to using any remedy, even a natural one, you should do several things to work to eliminate issues that may cause or worsen headaches in your life. Getting more sleep and exercising on a regular basis can be a help as both will work to relax the muscles in your neck and head.

Your diet is critically important as well. Many studies have shown that diets deficient of magnesium and B vitamins often cause headaches. And in these studies, it is noted that 50% of migraine sufferers are severely deficient in magnesium. With this fact known, it is recommended that sufferers increase their daily amounts by eating nuts, legumes, whole grains, meat and dark, leafy vegetables. B vitamins are readily found by consuming chicken, turkey, red meats, beans, and dark, leafy vegetables. Consuming raw garlic is also said to help considerably in relieving general fatigue and headache pain.

Just as some foods can help to prevent headaches and migraines, some are KNOWN to cause headaches and migraines. You should avoid eating chocolate (except for dark chocolate in moderation), drinking alcohol and consuming a lot of cheese. For some who battle chronic headaches or migraines, it is advised to keep track of what you eat as certain foods may be triggers for you. If you note a certain food is eaten and then a headache or migraine follows—you would be wise to remove this food from your consumption list to prevent it from causing you pain.

Our Headache Helper Remedy includes the following herbs:

White Willow--White willow is perhaps the oldest herb known to treat pain and inflammation. The inner bark of the white willow tree contains salicin, which is changed to salicylic acid in the body. The compound in aspirin, acetylsalicylic acid, is derived from salicylic acid. White willow works slower, but lasts longer than aspirin, and has fewer side effects, due to the large amounts of tannins that protect the stomach.

(NOTE: Do not take willow bark if you are allergic to aspirin, are currently taking anti-platelet or anticoagulant drugs, or a child under sixteen years of age who has symptoms of any kind of viral infection. Be aware that using other products or herbs containing salicylates at the same time (such as black cohosh, wintergreen essential oil, or commercial topical preparations such as Ben Gay), increases the amount of salicylates in your bloodstream, and raises the risk of side effects.)

Lemonbalmis best known for its calming properties and is often used to calm the system and help one rest.

Dandelion Leaf—offers high amounts of natural vitamin B and magnesium. Deficiencies of both have been linked to increased headaches and severity of migraines. Consuming dandelion helps to boost these levels of B and magnesium to help ward off headaches and migraines all together.

Wood Betony--is indicated for headaches and facial pain. Because it acts as a mild sedative, it relieves stress and nervous tension. It also stimulates the digestive system and the liver which helps to ease headache pain.

Chamomile-- Contains chemicals that are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and antiparasitic. It is one of the best herbs to help calm and soothe the system and provides relief to allow for good sleep.

Lavender--In general is used to relax muscle spasms anywhere in the body, and to relax the body in the presence of pain.
